The National Education Policy (NEP) was launched by the Ministry of Education, Government of India in the year 2020. The major emphasis of NEP-2020 is to impart education in the mother tongue so as to enhance creativity and critical thinking among students. In alignment with the above provisions of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has initiated the Technical Book Writing Scheme initially in nine languages viz. Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, Telugu, Punjabi, and Odia. Subsequently, three more languages — Assamese, Malayalam & Urdu — were added.
The journey of first-year engineering book writing began with identifying 20 courses — 11 at the Diploma level and 9 at the Degree level. Authors from various institutions were chosen to write original books in English. Simultaneously, translators and reviewers were identified through technical universities across India. Each language’s work was allocated to specific universities to ensure quality textbooks for all stakeholders.
For the second year, a total of 88 courses — 42 at the Degree level and 46 at the Diploma level — have been identified across five major disciplines: Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, and Civil Engineering. These are for original book writing in English and subsequent translation into 12 Indian languages.
With these initiatives, AICTE aims to provide outcome-based Technical Education Books in multiple Indian languages for students and faculty across technical institutions in India.
